The etymological origin of the verb “acechar” is found in the Latin “assectari”, derived from “adsequi” in the sense of “to pursue in order to catch”.

The new Spanish Penal Code punishes anyone who stalks a victim of gender violence, with a fine of up to two years and imprisonment for more than one year. The crime is defined as repeatedly and insistently monitoring or stalking the victim, significantly altering their daily routine.
Technological advances have given rise to a new form of stalking, which is cyberstalking, where surveillance is carried out especially through spying on social media posts.
It is easy to confuse aceler with asescar, but in this case, and even though they share the same etymology, it has another meaning, which is to make an attempt to deceive in order to cause harm.
