Keys to understanding your cat’s behavior

Cats have many and varied behaviors that must be analyzed and studied to understand the feline’s character.

Cats have a more difficult behaviour than other types of pets or animals that we can have, such as dogs. Their way of expressing themselves is very different and it can be difficult for us to know what their problem is and what their needs are as an animal. The differences in character between cats and dogs are very noticeable, cats can spend much more time alone at home without becoming distressed or suffering. Cats are more territorial than other types of pets and this can be very harmful if, for example, we want to incorporate another cat or dog into the family.

Nowadays, cats are the pets that many Spaniards prefer because of the ease of caring for them, but it is always necessary to attend to certain needs and behaviors that every pet may have at a given time. Related Article: My Cat Pees Where He Shouldn’t

Cats are a very difficult animal to train.

Cats are a very difficult animal to train and domesticate, they have a much wilder nature than other types of pets such as dogs. They are solitary hunters who do not need anyone else to survive in the world, but being solitary does not mean that the cat is unfriendly, only that it has other habits to survive.

As individuals as felines can be with their behaviour, they are also more territorial than other animals. The house in which they live with their owners is their territory, and they like to have it under control and do not allow any stranger to wander into their domain. When a cat climbs up to a high place or climbs on the back of the sofa, it is nothing more than a display of territoriality and control of the environment. On many occasions, this desire to control everything can be confused with curiosity to know every nook and cranny of the house.

Unlike a dog, a cat only accepts caresses when it wants them and will demand that its owner pay attention to it when it wants it. To get the attention of the people in the house, it will purr. In addition, cats need to be in the warmest place in winter and the coolest in summer, so when it feels overwhelmed by the tenants in the house and wants more independence, it will go to those places depending on the time of year.

The cat only accepts caresses when he feels like it.

Another aspect to take into account regarding their behavior is that, since they are nocturnal animals, they tend to sleep more during the day. They can usually sleep up to 12 hours, but there are many times when they just snooze and are able to stay alert for anything that may happen. Another aspect to take into account is that they also sleep based on their activity, that is, a bored cat will sleep much more than one that remains active during the day.

Cats are one of the cleanest pets we can find, which is why they lick and groom themselves several times a day. If we get our cats used to water from a young age, they will gladly accept baths, as well as the use of a litter box or sleeping in comfortable places.

Cats’ behavior is usually much more difficult to understand than dogs’, which is why we should go to our veterinarian if we have any doubts. There are problems with our pet that we may not see with the naked eye, but by observing our animal we can decipher that something is wrong with it.

Before adopting a cat into your home, consider whether it is the right pet for your situation and personality, seek information, and ask questions, do not adopt a pet that you cannot later maintain and care for.
