Global Village Meaning
A village is a small population center, being smaller than a town; and global, it refers to the world as a whole. This union of two terms so opposite to each other, since village gives us the idea of something small, and global, of something general and universal, forms an expression that has the meaning of indicating that even though our planet is enormous, Technological and media advances have largely erased cultural differences, and progress has reached everywhere as well as information. In the manner of a village, where people live in a community, sharing life experiences, the gigantic world can also be interconnected.
Origin of the term
The first to use this expression was the Canadian literature professor Marshall McLuhan (1911-1980), the father of media studies. His phrase “the medium is the message” describes his opinion on the relevance of the media. Several times in his works he referred to the “global village” to allude to the phenomenon of the function of communication through electronic means (at that time, the written press; but especially, radio, television, cinema, and computer advances, which provide immediacy, and provide audiovisual images) in social interconnection on a global scale. Satellite television and the Internet have further reinforced the concept of a global village.
Current usage
The phrase is currently used in several senses, in addition to its original: it refers to widespread behaviors in distant societies with different cultures, for example, in clothing, in musical tastes, in television series, video games, toys or in consumption habits, such as fast foods.
It also applies to the interdependence between different States worldwide, not only economic but also political, since decisions about legislative changes can have repercussions on other countries, which imitate the changes, especially if they come from hegemonic countries.
Consequences of the Global Village
As positive aspects, we can point out the agility of communications, which contribute to forging ties between people and groups, located in distant places, and having instant access to information.
On the negative side, although it seems that the global village creates community links that bring scientific and technological advances to all parts of the planet, unfortunately, reality shows us something different, where there are sectors of the population, or entire countries, excluded from the progress.
Another consequence (positive or negative, depending on how you look at it) is that cultural differences, born from the history of each people, are gradually erased to become homogenized.
