To drink is a first conjugation verb that originated in the Latin “abbiberare”, a term composed of the prefix of approximation “ad” and “bibere” which means to drink. To drink, according to its etymology, is to approach to drink. It is used especially in the case of cattle when they are taken to drink water or are given this liquid where they live. The places specially designated for this purpose are known as watering holes. They can also drink water in lagoons, streams, springs, and rivers that are natural watering holes. Birds that need to drink less water due to their small size, can obtain it from watering holes that hold small amounts of water, such as leaves that have concavities and store there what remains of the rain or dew.
Artificial water troughs are usually large, especially if they are intended for a large number of animals. They may contain circulating water or be stagnant. In the latter case, it is more difficult to prevent contamination, which is why they must be cleaned frequently. In bird cages, the water troughs are much smaller.
If there is no possibility of watering the cattle on one’s own or communal land, a watering easement may be established on a neighbouring property. This is a forced restriction of ownership for reasons of strict necessity, which also includes the passage of cattle through neighbouring property(ies). It is contemplated in the Spanish Civil Code in its article 555 and compensation must be granted to the person who must bear it.
