Cup Meaning
From the late Latin “cuppa”, a cup is a drinking vessel, similar to a glass, but with a stem. Depending on the liquid they contain, glasses vary in shape and size. For example, water glasses are large and slightly domed. Wine glasses are usually wide and either domed or convex; white wine glasses are smaller and narrower. Champagne glasses have a shorter stem and are elongated. Liqueur glasses are small. It can also be used to name the contents: “I really want to drink a glass of liquor.”
By extension, it is used in other areas, outside of gastronomy:
The cup can also be a trophy obtained by winning certain sports competitions: “My country’s football team won the World Cup in the last World Cup.” In tennis, the Davis Cup, which has been held since 1900, is the name of the annual international competition held in that sport, where the participants, all of them male, compete as part of teams, representing their respective countries. In women’s tennis there is a similar tournament, called the Federation Cup.
The term “cup” can be used to refer to the hollow part of the hat where the head fits. If the hollow is deep, with the crown rising and the brim narrow, it is called a top hat.
It is also a suit in the Spanish card game, which is recognized because the cards have as many cups drawn as the numbers they represent, although the highest number does not always equal the highest value. The four of cups, for example, is the lowest value card in the suit, in truco.
In trees, the crown is the upper part, made up of branches, leaves, and sometimes flowers and fruits: “During the pruning season, a good part of the tree’s crown was removed” or “This tree with a leafy crown provides very good shade.”
