Coenzyme B12 is a synthetic or artificial vitamin B12 to prevent deficiency or lack of vitamin B12. This vitamin is needed by the body to maintain metabolism and blood cells and nerves.

This drug can also be given as a treatment for someone who has anemia, digestive disorders, permanent nerve damage, and other conditions that cause vitamin B12 deficiency.

Coenzyme B12 Dosage

Dosage may vary for each individual, depending on the condition experienced. Discuss with your doctor first before using this drug, to get the right dosage. However, here are the general doses of coenzyme B12:

  1. Care for the elderly

The initial dose is 100 micrograms given as an injection into the muscle, once a day for seven days. However, in some cases, the dose can be increased to 1,000 micrograms.

  1. Malnutrition

Coenzyme B12 oral tablet form, the initial dose is 25 to 250 micrograms per day. This drug can also be given to infants and children, only the dosage is slightly different.

  • For infants with anemia, the initial dose is given as an injection into the muscle, as much as 0.2 micrograms per kilogram for the first two days. The dose can then be increased to 100 micrograms per kilogram for two to seven days.
  • For older children with anemia, the initial dose is an intramuscular injection of 20 to 50 micrograms per day for the first two weeks or more. The dose is then continued with an increase of 100 micrograms per month. The maximum total dose allowed is 1,000 micrograms.
  • Meanwhile, for children with vitamin B12 deficiency, the initial dose is 0.2 micrograms per kilogram for two days, followed by a dose of 1,000 micrograms per kilogram for two to seven days. Then, the dose is continued at 100 micrograms per kilogram for a month or 100 micrograms per kilogram for 10 to 15 days.

Side effects that can arise are:

  • Diarrhea

  • Joint pain
  • Itchy rash
  • Swollen tongue

How to Use Coenzyme B12

Follow your doctor’s instructions and read the instructions on the package before using this medication. For tablets, take this medication with water. This medication can be taken with or without food.

Drink regularly at the same time, to get optimal benefits. For injection form, use must be done with the help of a doctor or medical personnel.

Cautions on Using Coenzyme B12

Tell your doctor first about any medical history you have or are currently experiencing. For example, having an infection, iron or calcium deficiency, kidney disease, liver disease, and undergoing other treatments that affect the spinal cord.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and do not double the dose.

Contraindications of Coenzyme B12

Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to cobalt or have Leber’s disease. This medicine can damage blood vessels and cause blindness in people with Leber’s disease.
