Astrovirus
Astrovirus is a type of virus that causes gastroenteritis (diarrhea). Although it causes symptoms similar to common viral infections, diarrhea caused by astrovirus is generally much milder than that caused by rotavirus and norovirus. People with this disease also rarely need medical treatment.
Astrovirus Symptoms
The main symptom caused by astrovirus is mild diarrhea. Other symptoms include:
- Nauseous.
- Vomit.
- Stomach ache.
- Loss of appetite.
- Aches and pains.
- Fever.
The above symptoms are usually mild and can heal on their own without treatment. This disease only lasts for a few and rarely requires special treatment.
Causes of Astrovirus
Astroviruses can be found in animals such as dogs, birds, pigs, cows, bats, and dolphins. Infections from these viruses are more common in winter and spring. In tropical climates, astroviruses are more common during the rainy season.
Risk Factors for Astrovirus Infection
The triggering factors that increase the risk of disease are:
- Not washing hands before eating.
- Not washing hands after using the toilet.
- Not washing hands before preparing food.
- Not cleaning surfaces of frequently touched objects.
- Living or working in confined spaces, such as dormitories, barracks, and daycare centers.
Astrovirus Diagnosis
This virus can usually be diagnosed with a combination of a physical examination, a review of medical history, and blood and stool texture tests.
The inspection procedures include:
- A stool culture to test for astrovirus visually and chemically in stool samples.
- Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (EIA), a blood test that functions to examine immune proteins (antibodies) in response to microorganisms that cause infection.
- Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test, which is an examination that functions to detect astrovirus RNA (genetic material) in the blood.
Astrovirus Treatment
Treatment focuses on managing symptoms, such as reducing nausea or replacing fluids to prevent dehydration. These include medication and drinking plenty of water.
Astrovirus Complications
The complications that could occur are:
- Dark-colored urine.
- Decreased urine volume.
- Increased heart rate.
- Headache
- Red and dry skin.
- Irritability and confusion.
- My head feels light and dizzy.
- Severe nausea and vomiting
- Can’t eat.
Astrovirus Prevention
The preventive steps that can be taken are:
- Wash your hands after using the toilet.
- Do not share personal equipment with others.
- Do not prepare food while you have diarrhea.
- Use antiseptic or disinfectant to clean frequently touched surfaces.
- Rinse all meat, poultry, fish, fruits, and vegetables under running water before cooking.
- Wash hands with soap and water before and after cooking meat.
- Separate raw and cooked foods. Do not use the same utensils or cutting boards when cooking food.
- Make sure to cook the meat until it is completely cooked.
