Appreciation Meaning
The word appreciation is the result of the action of appreciating, a word that comes from the Latin “appretiāre”, and whose meaning is to value, to place a commercial or emotional price on certain facts or circumstances, things or people.
When we tell someone “I appreciate you very much” we are informing them that they are a very important person to us, that they enjoy our esteem and our friendship, that their actions are praiseworthy, etc. In addition to the person themselves, certain aspects of their personality or their actions can be the object of appreciation: “I appreciate your way of expressing yourself, so delicate and cordial” or “I appreciate how you do your work, always well prepared and responsible.”
When we say “according to my assessment of the facts” we are giving our personal point of view about what happened, making a subjective assessment, which may include whether or not it was important, whether it was lawful or not, etc. Something similar happens when we “appreciate” an artistic work (painting, sculpture, musical composition), a film or a literary text. When we make a positive or negative criticism of them we are valuing the work and therefore subject it to our appreciation.
At an economic level, the increase in the price of a currency in the market is called appreciation. If its value drops, we say that that currency is depreciated, and its exchange value is affected, in relation to the dollar, for example. In commerce, things are sold for a price, generally set by the law of supply and demand. This price that is set on things to market them is called money appreciation.
