Abomination Meaning
The verb abominate, from which abomination is derived, comes etymologically from the Latin word “abominari” with the meaning of condemning, cursing or abhorring subjects or objects. We can translate “ab” as estrangement and “ominis” as omen. The object of abomination is something despicable and cursed, and it foreshadows something bad and fatal. Many biblical terms have been translated as abomination. Denying God, lying, killing, being proud and other sins are considered abominations. In Leviticus taking a man as a woman (having homosexual relations) was considered an abomination, although most of the times when the abomination is spoken of biblically it is with reference to idolatry, that is, to worship false gods, which is why it can be assumed that the abomination with which homosexual practices are considered to be qualified is only with reference to idolatry cults.
What is abominable provokes terror and repulsion, rejection and one feels the desire to flee from its presence. In the literary, theatrical or cinematic genre of horror, abominable characters and things are used in order to frighten the reader or spectator.
In 1957, the British film “The Abominable Snowman”, belonging to the fantasy genre, brought to the big screen the story of the “yeti”, the legendary giant ape. The film ‘The Abominable Dr. Phibes’ from 1971, mixes the terrifying with the grotesque in a story that revolves around revenge, planned in a cruel and perverse way. In 2006, the film “Abominable” was released under the direction of Ryan Schifrin, which is about a monster that causes terror in the mountains, and of which a group of young people who are on a hike are victims.
