Acclimatize Meaning
Aclimatar is a regular, pronominal verb (allows reflexive conjugation) and of first conjugation, which came to Spanish from the French “acclimater” which implies the action of adapting to the average meteorological conditions of a certain geographical area. By extension, it applies to getting used to living conditions that are different from the usual ones, beyond the climatic ones.
In the strictest sense, living beings have developed, throughout their existence, adaptations to the areas where they have developed their existence. This has caused changes to occur at a genetic level, which predispose them to live in those areas, such as, for example, the leaves of plants in humid areas are larger and longer than those in dry areas, and in deserts they store water. Animals in dry areas also store water in their bodies, like camels; and in cold places, their bodies are protected by their fur, etc. If a living being, already adapted to a certain climate, is moved to another with different characteristics, it will suffer greatly in order to acclimatize, and, if the differences are very extreme, it will even perish. For example: “the plant withered in winter, because it is adapted to heat, and does not acclimatize well to cold”, “It is sad to see the polar bear in the zoo, and its inability to acclimatize to this hot area” or “Many birds migrate to milder climates in order to survive in the cold, because they cannot acclimatize.”
Humans also suffer from climate changes, but thanks to technology, they can change the weather conditions, at least indoors, to make acclimatization easier.
