Variegated Meaning
The word variegated seems to have originated in the Latin “bicerra”, a term composed of “bi” = “two” and “cirrus”, with the meaning of “flake made of wool”, in allusion to vulgar garments, of rough wool, bad combined in two colors, which the members of the Celtic tribes of Aquitaine, the Biguerri, used to wear. From Latin it passed into French as “bigarré” and then into Spanish.
This is how variegated became a synonym for extravagant, heterogeneous colors, arranged in a bad combination, and by extension, the set of things that are arranged in a disordered, imprecise or unconnected way.
Examples of use: “The painting has variegated colors, and although it belongs to a famous painter, it doesn’t seem aesthetically pretty to me”, “Your dress has variegated tones, I don’t know if it’s pretty, but I’m sure you won’t go unnoticed”, “If you put on makeup in such a motley way, you will only get them to criticize you, since you look like a clown”, “My cousin’s house has so much motley furniture that it seems smaller than it really is” or “The alliance of political parties combines ideologies so motley that “They will never be able to agree.”
It is a pejorative and highly subjective concept, since although in certain cases there are aesthetic canons that allow objectively qualifying what is variegated from what is not, there are others, in which it will depend on the tastes of the observer, and also on fashion.
The Bolivian sociologist and politician, René Zavaleta Mercado, born in Oruro in 1935 and died in Mexico in 1984, called a “variegated society” one where the different cultures within a society are juxtaposed at different levels of power. This variegated characteristic is more frequent for René Zavaleta Mercado in pre-capitalist societies than in capitalist ones, where there is a tendency towards homogenization.
