Abduction Meaning
Abduction from the Latin “abductio” means separation, and implies in Biology, a transverse movement by which a part of the body makes an erect movement with respect to the median plane that imaginary divides the body into two halves. Adduction is the movement that opposes abduction, which involves approaching the plane of symmetry. The deltoid muscle is an abductor muscle of the shoulder that allows the arm to be raised.
In the field of Science Fiction and stories from people who claim to have suffered this type of experiences, the term abduction is applied to the act of kidnapping an individual from planet Earth by extraterrestrial beings, without knowing their whereabouts, and therefore which said being “disappears”, temporarily or permanently, supposedly for the purposes of experimentation. Those who return to Earth say they suffer from temporary amnesia regarding what they experienced in the extraterrestrial experience. Among the numerous films that address this theme, we can name “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”, an American production, released in 2020 under the direction of Michael Mazzola. In Literature, the first work of the genre was “The War of the Worlds”, which was published in 1898, and written by the British novelist HG Wells, which tells of the fact that Martians invade planet Earth. These fictional stories have, however, many times been based on supposed real cases, such as the one in Chile in April 1977, by Army Corporal Armando Valdés Garrido, who disappeared from the sight of his companions, while a strong light dazzled them. Valdés himself denied the fact. Another case happened in 1998, when a video appeared, supposedly recorded by the Mcpherson family in his house, but the members had disappeared. The film tells of an encounter with extraterrestrials. It was later proven that it was recorded by actors.

In Logic, abduction is called that syllogism that has an evident major premise, the minor premise being probable, the conclusion having the character of probable, to the same degree as the minor premise. The conclusion is therefore not necessarily true, but only probable since it includes the introduction of a novel idea. It is widely used in research and for explanatory purposes but requires verification. Example of abductive reasoning: Major premise: “All of Carlos’s cats are black”, Minor premise: “This cat is black”, Conclusion: “This cat is Carlos’s”.
